Connection view of knowledge...rather than a reductionist?

Although this is post from a software company blog, it describes in simple words how the vast amount of data/information can be viewed as networks and webs with connections. We actually all do this in our brain, rather than categorizing, sub-categorizing and sub-sub-categorizing.... like we are trained from elementary school to university.

I agree with the effectiveness of network thinking. I think it's essential to our survival in today's information-flooded word.The "folders/sub-folders/sub-sub-folders" perspective is obsolete - it's still useful, but by this approach alone is inadequate to manage knowledge nowadays. How shall be integrate the two approaches and make less stress out of the information available to us?

近來有一連串好消息, 一定要分享分享, 等大家一齊開心下-如果仲有人睇的話...咁耐唔update~|~)。

首先, Joyce 的 H1-Working Permit 已經成功辦妥。H1 是非美國公民居留工作的移民身份. Joyce 自上年畢業後有一年的 Optional Practical Training- 如果沒有 H1, 便要在八月執包袱。除了 Green Card 以外, 申請 H1 可算是最麻煩的程序之一; 加上Joyce 工作的醫院有濃厚的官僚主義, 協調各部門、老闆、律司 (醫院和我們的) 便額外困難。另外, 現時美國的 H1 限額偏低, 每年只有 ~25% 申請人成功取得工作身份。幸好 Joyce 的醫院是政府部門, 又和大學的研究有聯繫, 可以不受配額限制; 經過差不多半年的寫信、收信、找(炒)律師、和各種politics以後, 我們終於在兩星期前收到申請成功的通知。這等於 Joyce 起碼可以多留三年 - 差不多到我畢業的時候。

第二, 年頭申請了 American Heart Association 的 Pre-doctorl Fellowship - 為了寫 Proposal, 我甚至回到香港還要工作。同樣是兩個星期前, 我收到 AHA 的 回覆 - Review Score: 1.3875 (Scale 1-5) Percentile: 12.26%. 分數是逾低逾好, 12.26% 等於我的申請在一百份 Proposal 中排名 12.26。 上星期, AHA 正式批了兩年的 Pre-doctoral fellowship。每年 $21770 美金, 比之微薄的學生津貼多了四千多; 而這 Proposal 便可更有說服力地成為我的 Doctoral Prospectus。

第三, Physics 的一個 Professor 對我的 Project 很感興趣, 提議我申請一個法國的 Summer School - Dynamics of Software Condensed Matter (DynaSoft 2008). 這為期兩星期的workshop 會在法國南部一個小島上舉行, 參加者包括從歐美邀請了 20 個 speakers 和 被選上的 60 個研究生/post-doc。雖然被選上本身已經是一個好消息, 但去參加的成本大約需要三萬港元。我無錢,老細都無錢。然後我寫了一個 Statement 問 Physics 同 另一個 affiliated 的研究中心要錢 ....... 全部都無錢。我以為若是神給我安排的機會, 祂也會預備旅費; 但以後的一個月都無回音。直至上星期, 我致電 Institute of Complex Adaptive Matter (ICAM) 的 co-director-他說 ICAM 會全數支付旅費、Conference Registration、住宿和食用,其他搭船、火車、的士等可以後來再開數。換言之, 法國南部的兩星期完全免費 (我又另外申請了學校 US$500 資助 - 現在變成了零用錢) - 連老細知道都「登」我高興。

第四, 從法國回來以後將會到 North Carolina 的 Asylum Research 進行兩天的 Atomic Force Microscope training。其他研究生的經驗是老細多數無錢, 但今次他竟神奇地願意出錢 - 希望學到多一d AFM 的操作技巧。

最後, 這比較雞毛蒜皮: 上星期有一個德國請來的 Seminar Speaker, 老細請我星期六一齊去玩 - 從午餐到晚餐等所有費用由老細包辦。Networking/Connection 對每一行都十分重要。老細只叫了我去, 交談和討論等都比較方便; 計劃以後保持聯絡, 或許可以帶來新的機遇。老細今次咁益我, 都算「唔話得」嘞。 好. 零八年六月份好消息報告完畢。
